Halloween is a favorite time of year for many people. What's not to like about a mountain of free candy? Many adults continue to trick or treat with their kids or eat plenty of candy at parties with their friends. While it's fine to indulge and have a little fun, it's no surprise that Halloween is not a favorite holiday for many dental clinics. If you want your teeth and smile to make through the holiday in good shape, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Put Out Healthier Food at Your Own Party

Let's start with what is easy for you to control. You can't very well order others what to serve at their parties, but you can lead by example by including some healthier food options at your own Halloween bash. Put out some fresh fruit in addition to the chocolate and other sweets so that people have an option. Just be sure you stick to your own game plan, and stay away from the candy.

Use Chewing Gum

It's unlikely you'll have anywhere to brush your teeth while you are out trick or treating, and it would be just weird to ask where the bathroom is at a house party just so you can brush your teeth. A better option that can at least do some good for you without causing people to stare is to bring a supply of sugarless chewing gum with you. If you decide to indulge in the candy, pop a stick of chewing gum in afterwards to get your saliva to begin the cleaning process.

Don't Let the Candy Linger

The worst kinds of candy are the ones that literally coat your entire teeth with sugar. At the end of the night when you are going through your candy bag, try and put aside items that would be especially bad for you. Any kind of hard candy that you have to keep in your mouth and suck on for a long time should be a no-go. For the candy that you do eat, put it in your mouth, chew it up, and swallow it down before it can do too much damage.

Halloween is a fun time, and you should feel free to enjoy it a little.
